John Handleman was the former love interest of Ginger Ward. They had gone to school together and started a romantic relationship at the young age of sixteen, something that John's mother Beatrice Handleman encouraged believing that they were beautiful together. Eventually Ginger became pregnant with John's child, however her mother found out and insisted on young Ginger to have an abortion, believing it was the best thing to do. When John learned of the abortion he enlisted to serve in the Vietnam War and he and Ginger lost touch. During his active duty in Vietnam John was wounded by gunshot and returned home only to die months later from his injuries, a fact that Ginger was not aware of until years later.
